The Chidlow Marsupial Hospital offers courses in the treatment and care of marsupials. The courses can be structured to meet the needs of the participants and would typically be undertaken as half day sessions over successive weekends.
The sessions can cover any or all of the following topics:
• Classification, identification and distribution of commonly seen marsupials
• Hand rearing orphaned young
• Diets and housing
• Handling and restraint
• Drug use, administration of medication and injection sites
• First aid and treatment procedures
• Anaesthesia and radiography
The courses are presented by Liz Appelt. Liz is a qualified veterinary nurse who has been caring for orphaned and injured marsupials for over 25 years. Liz lectures in Marsupial Care at Bentley TAFE and for 18 years was the marsupial lecturer at wildlife carers courses run by the Department of Environment and Conservation.
The courses provide “hands on” learning in a relaxed environment with an expert carer. They would be of interest to veterinary students, veterinary nurses, wildlife carers, rangers, DEC volunteers, tour guides or anyone wanting to know more about marsupials.
The number of participants on any course will be restricted to a maximum of 10.
